I stumbled upon Pioneer Works on my recent visit to Red Hook after a recommendation. It is a mix of a large event space and a co-working space for artists, photographers, etc. They will let you wander around. They don't charge an admission, per se, but do ask for a donation. My favorite room was the 3D printer space.
