Some notes on replacing a newer Getrag 260 with an older one, on a BMW E30 3 series or E28 5 series. Here, the original transmission was in a 1986 325es. I assume that it was original to that car. It would not go into fourth gear, necessitating replacement.

The dogleg 265 (M3/M535) gearbox is stout, but the small dogleg 245 (323i) is not going to handle a lot of power. Most importantly, it's going to depend completely on how you drive the car--people kill drivelines, not horsepower. M50 manual cars got ZF and Getrag M30 manual cars came with Getrags. From what I have read the ZF is the more sought after and stronger trans for the M50. First, there is a drive gear on the trans output shaft that is replaced by a spacer bushing on the M3 trans.
